Psychology and Dance
As a former psychology student this Ted Talk caught my eye. The most shocking statistic from this video is that the hippocampus shrinks about one percent each year. However in dancers it usually grows by one percent. This is due to a three part process being; physical movement, social connection, and cognitive functioning. This trifecta helps guide movers of all abilities to new found mental awareness. In fact Parkinsons patients benefit greatly by dance regularly and can actually revers quite a lot of anxiety and motor control issues. Dance has an ability more than any activity to create better mental health which can be shocking. Combining dance and music leads to huge leaps in mental and cognitive functioning. I look forward to coming back to questions within psychology and dance. The interrelatedness and exploration in these fields is astounding.
