Thinking, Talking, Change via March discussion

 Hello All,

I missed March 28th's discussion for work. However, it has been so lovely reading through the material and multiple experiences you all have shared. I appreciated Helen's note on looking at the natural flow. Like the flow state phenomenon in psychology, there is subtle growth in those moments of teaching or dancing, etc. in those zones; there is a new experience. For me, I have been noticing these subtle nuances in this last semester as we move together through uncertain times, which leads into the next part; of life and dance or art. This semester although challenging enough, my community has been hit hard by violent events. This has made me connect so much more to the healing nature of dance and human connection. It made me look at just moving, being together for one another through art and time, rather than focusing on technical nuances as much as I usually would. I also feel it's not an end goal or a one-time feeling. It's this sense of reacting to an event and growing my practice through life. Seeing that connection between life and dance has been touching. The last notion of being vulnerable is something I continue to grow into. I don't think I would normally share how the attacks on my community affect us all. I usually have my "ballerina" wall and keep moving forward. But it has made me look at my practice and others differently. I have been seeking different creative modalities and changing my classes to match life. I'm working on letting go of ballet perfection to enjoy movement and nuances of life and natural connection through movement! I would love to hear your thoughts or experiences as well! Warmly, Julianna

  1. Hi Julianna,
Really sorry to hear about the attacks on your community, hope you are safe and well.
Growing up as dancers we have the walls of our dance studios as our own little "world", having to face with outside events can really take an emotional and mental toll on us.
When I was researching about the benefits of dance and movement therapy and how they help coping with all sort of difficulties in life, I found out that in dance movement's therapy of connection is movement flow. I believe that it is important for us to take time and see how we inhabit our bodies, how we move in space, and how we interact with others, this way we can find ourselves again, and feel more "in the moment".
    Maria
