MA Monthly Skype how the general public interacts with dance

For my second post I wanted to discuss a topic that crossed my path this week. There is a statistic floating around recently in my dance community which states that only 6 percent of the world will see a live ballet or has seen a live ballet. This was very shocking to me at first. As dancers and educators dance really encompasses a large part of our lives. From the mind to the body to teaching methodologies there is constant contemplation, dedication, and refinement. Therefore, are there other outlets to share our movement? Social media is a one of those complex templates. In one instance it has some damaging effects to artists careers, popularity, and lastly mental health. In the other sense you have these amazing artists sharing their pure love of dance outside the confines of a company. Some artists that inspire me personally are Emma Portner, LeoWalkinParis, Greg Lau, and Alice Klock. These artists are sharing movement in creative ways without the confines of companies. It is really inspiring for youth to see this kind of pure and authentic movement. I believe social media is a great outlet for the viewer and for the artist if done mindfully. It is way to share art to the public who may not have access to dance or the means. This is a topic that crosses my mind often as we look find ways to connect dance with the world in meaningful ways... Would love to hear thoughts on this...
